Internet Connectivity Dilemma: VPN Access Issues Surge in Pakistan Amid Ongoing Restrictions

-

Pakistani internet users are facing significant issues with VPN access, especially when trying to bypass restrictions to access platforms like X (formerly Twitter). On Sunday, many reported slow speeds and limited access, with some services, including VPN Unlimited and Tunnelbear, becoming entirely inaccessible. Downdetector recorded a sharp increase in outage reports, particularly from users of these services.

VPNs are a popular tool for bypassing restrictions, particularly for accessing X, which remains banned in Pakistan. The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has ramped up efforts to block VPN usage as part of its crackdown on access to the platform. Information Minister Attaullah Tarar has justified the ban, citing national security concerns.

Despite the PTA’s denials, users continue to experience access issues. A report by digital rights group Bytes For All (B4A) found that VPN users in Pakistan experienced better speeds and fewer disruptions than regular connections, highlighting the advantages of VPN access amidst ongoing restrictions.
