Islamabad Sealed Off with 100 Containers Ahead of PTI Rally; 400 Detained

-

Security Tightened as Authorities Brace for Protests

In a bid to thwart the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) protest rally, authorities have sealed off D-Chowk in Islamabad by deploying over 100 containers as part of enhanced security measures.

The federal police established a three-tier security cordon around the protest site to prevent demonstrators from accessing the Red Zone. The PTI had organized a large-scale protest at D-Chowk, prompting police to close all entry points to the area. Early on Friday, police began arresting individuals attempting to reach D-Chowk, including two civilians and one PTI member.

Rawalpindi Roads Blocked

Security measures in Rawalpindi are equally stringent, with major routes leading to Islamabad, such as Murree Road and Peshawar Road, being blocked by containers and barricades. Key junctions like Charing Cross, MH Chowk, Hyder Road, and Fleishman Chowk are entirely shut, causing major traffic disruptions. However, roads to Kutchehry Chowk, Sawal Bridge, and the airport remain open, according to local traffic police.

Mass Detentions in Islamabad

Over 400 individuals have been detained across Islamabad as part of the government’s crackdown on PTI supporters, including 60 people believed to be of Afghan origin. These arrests occurred in areas such as Bara Kahu, Tarnol, and Sangjani. Security forces reportedly seized sticks, slingshots, pebbles, and stones from those detained.

Section 144 Imposed

Section 144 has been enacted throughout Islamabad and Rawalpindi, prohibiting public gatherings and protests. While the ban includes restrictions on pillion riding of motorcycles, exemptions apply to journalists, women, children, and the elderly.

Rangers Deployed in Red Zone

To reinforce security in Islamabad’s Red Zone, the government has deployed Rangers to assist local police. Heavy law enforcement contingents have been positioned at all key city entrances, with containers blocking major roads to prevent an influx of protesters.

The government is committed to preventing the PTI’s march to D-Chowk, preparing for a potential confrontation. Metro bus services between Islamabad and Rawalpindi have been suspended, and all educational institutions are closed. The work-from-home directive for private offices remains in effect, with commercial centers expected to stay shut during the protest.

Authorities are determined to address the situation firmly, with specialized police teams assigned to conduct arrests. The ban on pillion riding of motorcycles continues to be enforced in the twin cities.
