Screen Time Warning-It’s Hurting Our Kids’ Hearts!

-

A shocking new study has revealed that our children’s favorite pastime—watching screens—could be putting them on a fast track to serious health problems.

Researchers are sounding the alarm, directly linking increased screen time to a higher risk of heart disease and diabetes.

Published in the Journal of the American Heart Association, the research found that even just one extra hour a day on a phone, tablet, or TV can significantly raise a child’s chances of developing dangerous metabolic conditions. As lead researcher David Horner put it, “Every hour counts.”

The Hidden Health Dangers

This isn’t just about kids being less active. The study showed that excessive screen time is tied to key cardiometabolic risk factors, such as high blood pressure, poor cholesterol, and insulin resistance.

These are the red flags for heart disease and Type 2 diabetes down the road. What’s more, the research found that all that screen time often messes with a child’s sleep, making these health risks even worse.

A Call to Action for Parents

The message is clear: it’s time to take control. Experts are urging parents to find a better balance with these simple steps:

Limit screen time to a maximum of two hours a day, outside of schoolwork.

Encourage physical activity like sports, cycling, or just playing outside.

Establish healthy sleep routines and keep devices out of the bedroom.

Promote device-free time for the entire family.

With kids around the world, including here in Pakistan, spending more time on screens, these findings are a wake-up call for our communities. Taking action now can help protect the health of the next generation.
