Staff Shortage Threatens Patient Care at Jinnah Hospital

-

Jinnah Hospital, one of Karachi’s most important medical facilities, is severely understaffed, particularly in its Intensive Care Units (ICUs), leading to the underutilization of available ventilators.

ARY revelas that Out of 10 ventilators in the medical ICU, only six are operational, and just eight out of 24 ventilators in the surgical ICU are functional. The Clinical ICU has only seven working ventilators out of 15, while in the Neuro Trauma Unit, just one of six ventilators is in use.

Earlier this year, Jinnah Hospital laid off 168 employees, including nurses and other staff, due to financial constraints. This has further exacerbated the hospital’s staffing issues, putting patient care at serious risk.

Despite requiring 58 nurses in the medical ICU, only eight are available, leaving 24 ventilators across the hospital non-operational due to a shortage of trained staff. As a result, critically ill patients remain vulnerable, with no immediate solutions to the staffing crisis.
