“Darkness Beneath the Lamp” – Unfit Vehicles, Poor Waste Disposal Hamper Punjab’s Fight Against Smog

-

A significant portion of waste management systems consists of unfit vehicles having lack wheel fitness certificates, while public hospitals have no proper disposal arrangements for daily waste.

From roadside eateries to five-star restaurants and wedding halls, there’s no organized system for disposing of food waste.

Additionally, transportation for government institutions, colleges, and universities lacks vehicle fitness certification. There’s no official waste disposal system for vegetable, fruit, and livestock markets, and sewage channels remain uncleaned.

Experts emphasize that a clean environment requires not only hygiene and cleanliness but also planting trees that release oxygen and moisture into the air. Former Provincial Health Minister Professor Dr. Javed Akram suggests a 50-year government plan to protect cities from environmental pollution—one that no new administration could overturn.
