Pakistan has granted its spy agency, the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), the authority to intercept and trace calls in the name of national security

The Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication issued a notification stating that this authorization falls under Section 54 of the Pakistan Telecommunication (Re-organisation) Act, 1996. The notification further specifies that officers nominated by the ISI for this task must hold a rank not lower than grade 18.

The federal government has authorized the ISI to intercept and trace communications under Section 54 of the Telecommunication (Re-organization) Act 1996, citing concerns for national security.

This decision aligns with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s government’s efforts to strengthen social media regulations, including the ongoing ban on the platform X.
