The iconic International Hair Freezing Contest at Takhini Hot Springs in Whitehorse, Yukon, wrapped up its most recent edition in March 2023. The competition, a thrilling winter tradition, challenges participants to sculpt their hair in freezing temperatures, resulting in breathtaking frozen hairstyles.

Categories like Best Male, Best Female, Most Creative, and Best Facial Hair attract participants from around the globe, with winners walking away with a CAD 2,000 cash prize and a hot springs experience.

Since its inception in 2011, the contest has grown in popularity, drawing hundreds of creative individuals eager to brave the -20°C temperatures for a chance to showcase their talent. The 2019/2020 edition alone saw 288 entrants competing for top honors, underlining the contest’s growing cultural significance.

As the 2024/2025 season kicks off, the contest remains in full swing, with entrants automatically included as temperatures dip below -20°C, typically from January to March. Expect a flurry of imaginative entries as the season progresses, with winners to be announced in March 2025.

The Hair Freezing Contest celebrates more than just artistic expression—it’s a testament to the resilience of those who endure the Yukon’s frosty temperatures to create truly unique works of frozen art. Don’t miss your chance to be part of this cool tradition next year!
