Boxing has lost one of its greatest champions. Former heavyweight legend George Foreman, who defied the odds to reclaim his title at 45, passed away on Friday at the age of 76.

From his reign as a fearsome knockout artist to his triumphant return and later success as an entrepreneur, Foreman’s journey was a testament to resilience, reinvention, and greatness.

“With heavy hearts, we share the passing of our beloved George Edward Foreman Sr., who left us peacefully on March 21, 2025, surrounded by family,”

his family announced on Instagram.

Foreman’s rise to fame began with his thunderous punches, winning the heavyweight title in 1973. His first reign ended in the legendary Rumble in the Jungle against Muhammad Ali, but two decades later, he shocked the world by regaining the championship.

Born in Marshall, Texas, on January 10, 1949, Foreman grew up in Houston’s rough Fifth Ward, raised by a single mother alongside six siblings. He dropped out of school and found trouble on the streets before the Job Corps program gave him a path forward. At 19, he won Olympic gold in Mexico City, launching a career that would see him dominate the heavyweight division.

“George’s journey from Houston’s Fifth Ward to global success in boxing and business was truly inspiring,We will always be proud to call him one of our own.”

said Houston Mayor John Whitmire.

Following his loss to Ali, Foreman stepped away from the sport, later becoming a minister. A decade later, he made an astonishing comeback, proving that no dream is too far-fetched.

Outside the ring, he became a household name with the George Foreman Grill, turning it into a multimillion-dollar success.

Foreman was married five times and had a large family, including five sons—all named George—and several daughters.

His impact extends far beyond boxing. From a feared fighter to a beloved businessman and mentor, George Foreman’s story remains one of the greatest comebacks of all time. His legacy will continue to inspire generations.
