In a surprising turn of events, Afghanistan secured a seven-wicket victory against Papua New Guinea on Friday, spelling the end for New Zealand’s journey in the T20 World Cup 2024.
The match took place at the Brian Lara Stadium in Tarouba, Trinidad, where Afghanistan smoothly advanced to the Super 8 stage, leaving New Zealand behind in the tournament.
Afghanistan reached the target of 95 runs in just 15.1 overs, losing only three wickets along the way. While openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran fell early, Gulbadin Naib’s unbeaten 49 runs off 36 balls, supported by four fours and two sixes, secured victory for his team.
Earlier, Afghanistan’s clinical bowling restricted Papua New Guinea to a mere 95 runs in 19.5 overs. Papua New Guinea struggled early, slipping to 17-4 in the fourth over, which significantly hindered their chances of setting a competitive total.
Despite Kiplin Doriga’s contribution of 27 runs in 32 balls, Papua New Guinea failed to pose a substantial challenge.
Once again, pacer Fazalhaq Farooqi stood out for Afghanistan with impressive figures of 3-16 in four overs, earning him the Player of the Match title.
“I want to congratulate the entire team because we have now officially qualified for the Super 8. I feel proud,” said Farooqi, reflecting on his team’s achievement.
Looking ahead, Farooqi emphasized the importance of giving their all in the upcoming matches, acknowledging the need to adapt strategies based on match conditions.
With Afghanistan and the West Indies advancing from Group C to the Super 8, Papua New Guinea and New Zealand bid farewell to the tournament.
