Karachi received another spell of monsoon showers on Tuesday, recording 33.7 mm of rainfall at Old Airport, which cooled down the weather but left the city reeling with power outages, flooded streets, and paralyzing traffic jams.
The rain, caused by a low-pressure system over the Gulf of Khambhat and Gujarat (India), lashed areas including Shershah, Baldia, Mauripur, Hawks Bay, Shaheed-e-Millat Road, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, PECHS, University Road, PIDC, Bizerta Lines, and Kala Pul. Strong winds accompanied the showers, exposing Karachi’s fragile infrastructure.
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), the system is still active about 340 km southeast of Karachi near Saurashtra, Gujarat. It may intensify into a depression before moving towards the northeast Arabian Sea near the Gulf of Kutch, bringing more rain to Karachi and parts of Sindh till Wednesday.
Power Cut and Traffic Paralysis
The rain tripped over 60 power feeders, plunging Malir, Lyari, Keamari, Gulshan-e-Maymar, Liaquatabad, and Korangi into darkness. On the roads, chaos took over as Shahrah-e-Faisal, Rashid Minhas Road, Korangi, Malir, Defence, Clifton, Saddar, and Gulistan-e-Jauhar were submerged. Commuters were forced to walk, while bikers dragged their stalled motorcycles through knee-deep water.
Citizens slammed municipal bodies and traffic police for failing to control the situation.
