Pakistani Doctor Receives ‘Order of Canada’ for Outstanding Contributions to Global Health

A proud moment for Pakistan as Dr. Zulfiqar Ahmed Bhutta, a distinguished Pakistani doctor, has been honoured with one of Canada’s highest civilian awards, the Officer of the Order of Canada, in recognition of his exceptional contributions to global health.

This prestigious accolade highlights his groundbreaking work in improving maternal, newborn, and child health, particularly in underserved communities across the world.

The Order of Canada, established in 1967, is given to individuals who have made “extraordinary contributions to the nation.” With over 7,600 recipients from various sectors, this year’s list included 88 honourees, and Dr. Bhutta was one of the 24 individuals inducted as officers.

Dr. Bhutta’s pioneering research has impacted public health policies globally, from the World Health Organization (WHO) to initiatives in marginalized regions. Reflecting on his recognition, Dr. Bhutta expressed his gratitude, saying, “I am deeply honoured by this recognition and profoundly grateful to a generation of students and colleagues who have worked with me over the years on the challenges faced by women and children in Pakistan and other low-income countries.
