A historic artifact linked to the Titanic has achieved a record-breaking auction price.
The 18-carat gold pocket watch, crafted by Tiffany & Co., belonged to Captain Arthur Rostron of the RMS Carpathia, who saved 700 Titanic survivors. The watch was a gift from three female survivors as a token of gratitude for his heroic efforts in redirecting his ship to rescue them and others.

Auctioned by Henry Aldridge & Son to a private collector in the U.S., the watch fetched nearly $2 million, making it one of the most valuable Titanic artifacts ever sold. The final amount includes buyer taxes and fees.

The timepiece was originally presented to Captain Rostron by the widow of John Jacob Astor, the wealthiest passenger to perish in the tragedy, alongside two other affluent widows.
