A shooting incident at Punjab University claimed the life of 22-year-old Rana Ammar Akhter, a student from Kasur. The tragedy unfolded near the university’s sports gymnasium, where Ammar was shot while sitting in a vehicle.
Sources suggest the shooter was a student named Huzaifa, seated in the back. Despite being rushed to Sheikh Zayed Hospital by fellow students at Punjab University, Dilawar, and an unidentified person, Ammar tragically succumbed to his injuries after unsuccessful efforts to save him.
The shocking incident sparked protests by a student organization outside the university, which led to major traffic jams on Canal Road, Barkat Market, and nearby areas. Protesters allegedly vandalized the university’s admin block, damaging property. The situation remains tense at Punjab University.
Punjab University’s spokesperson quickly denied the shooting occurred on campus, accusing the student organization of spreading false rumors. However, sources confirmed that the shooting took place near the sports gymnasium.
Sheikh Zayed Hospital confirmed that Ammar was shot three times in the chest, stomach, and leg. Despite medical attempts, he was declared dead in the operating theater. Police are investigating the incident and have detained the students who brought Ammar to the hospital.
The victim’s family, particularly his uncle Rana Irshad, has demanded justice. Irshad stated that Ammar was not involved in any student organization and had no known enemies. He called for the punishment of those responsible for his nephew’s death.
In a press conference, Punjab University officials, including Pro-Vice Chancellor Dr. Khalid Mahmood, rejected claims that the shooting happened on campus. Dr. Mahmood clarified that investigations, including CCTV footage review, found no evidence of the shooting occurring within university grounds.
He criticized the Islami Jamiat Talba (IJT) for vandalizing the admin block and canteen in response. Dr. Mahmood urged students to refrain from protests until the investigation is concluded and assured the university’s full cooperation with authorities.
