Karachi’s coastal residents are dealing with a strong, unpleasant smell following the recent monsoon rains.
Experts attribute the odor to the decay of phytoplankton, particularly Noctiluca scintillans (Sea Sparkle), which washes ashore at the end of the monsoon season.
This marine plant blooms during pre- and post-monsoon periods, turning the sea green and releasing toxins that can harm marine life. When it decomposes onshore, it emits the foul odor affecting coastal areas.
Despite the smell, phytoplankton are crucial for producing oxygen and sustaining marine ecosystems, though their massive blooms near Pakistan’s coast cause discomfort annually.
