‘Charter of Parliament’ Government and Opposition Unite on Key Reforms Following September 9 Incident

-

In a major step to strengthen parliamentary governance, the government and opposition have reached an agreement on reforms concerning the management of parliamentary proceedings.

Both sides have approved the “Charter of Parliament,” which includes the formation of a 16-member committee aimed at improving parliamentary operations.

The proposal, introduced by Information Minister Atta Tarar, was passed by the Lower House of Parliament.

In response to a security breach on September 9, Speaker Ayaz Sadiq suspended several officials, including Sergeant-at-Arms Ashfaq Ashraf. Additionally, a four-member committee has been set up to investigate the security lapses, and five Capital Development Authority (CDA) officials were suspended for their involvement in a power outage during the incident.

Speaker Sadiq also stressed the importance of preserving the dignity of Parliament and ensuring fair representation for all.

Addressing concerns over alleged arrests within Parliament, Tarar clarified that no one was detained, with video evidence available in the Speaker’s office supporting this claim.

The committee, with equal representation from both the government and opposition, will submit a detailed report to Speaker Sadiq regarding the events of September 9.
