JI Calls for Nationwide Strike on Independence Day, Announces Protests Across Pakistan

-

ISLAMABAD: JI Amir Hafiz Naeemur Rehman has announced a nationwide shutter-down strike starting on August 14, with a series of protests planned in major cities.

During a press conference at the party’s sit-in in Rawalpindi, Rehman outlined the protest schedule, including a march on Murree Road on August 8, a major protest outside the Chief Minister’s House in Lahore on August 11, and another demonstration in Peshawar on August 12.

Rehman called for the termination or review of agreements with Independent Power Producers (IPPs) and demanded a forensic audit of these contracts.

He emphasized the burden of rising electricity bills on households and insisted that charges should align with the actual cost of electricity.

In a lighter vein, he commented on the disappearance of the government’s negotiation committee, suggesting they might need to advertise for its whereabouts.

Rehman pointed out that the ongoing sit-in has disrupted the government’s comfort and proposed that the negotiation committee should include the Auditor General of Pakistan, the Chairman of WAPDA, the Federal Chamber of Commerce, and consumer representatives.

In response to questions, Rehman clarified that overthrowing the government is not their current objective, but it could become necessary depending on the government’s future actions.
