A stampede at the Bashorun Islamic High School festival in Ibadan, Nigeria, has resulted in the deaths of over 30 children. Authorities have warned that the death toll could rise.

Oyo State Police spokesman Eddywal Osifsu stated that investigations are ongoing to determine the exact number of victims.

Officials confirmed that at least 30 children were killed in the stampede at the festival in the southwestern Nigerian state of Oyo.

Spokesman Dotun Awelesa told reporters that the death toll could increase following a detailed statement from the police. When contacted for updates, he mentioned that investigations are still underway to determine the exact number of victims.

It is reported that the festival was organized by a non-governmental organization called “Women in Need of Guidance and Support,” and the police are questioning its founder, Naomi Slikowonla.

According to reports, the organizers had planned food and gift items for 5,000 children, but by around 5 a.m. on Wednesday, nearly 8,000 people had gathered at the venue.

Multiple sources at the scene reported that the victims died in the stampede while attempting to break through the main gate of the venue.
