In Maldives, Minister of Environment Fatima Shemaan and her ex-husband Adam Rameez have been arrested on charges of practicing black magic against President Mohamed Nasheed.
According to local media, Adam Rameez, who was also a former minister, and both were dismissed from their positions just yesterday. Today, they have been arrested.
Police sources informed the media that Minister of Environment Shemaan was arrested on Sunday along with two others and sent on a remand for 7 days.
There is no specified punishment for black magic under Maldivian law, but under Sharia laws, it could lead to a six-month imprisonment.
It is noteworthy that when Mohamed Nasheed was the mayor, Shemaan and Rameez were members of the city council, and all three had friendly relations.
Last November, after Mohamed Nasheed became president, Shemaan was initially appointed as Minister of State in the presidential residence Muliyaage and later transferred to the Ministry of Environment.
According to local media, Shemaan’s ex-husband Rameez has been missing from public view for more than six months and has been silent since Mohamed Nasheed became president.
The Maldivian government and the presidential office have not yet issued any statement on the matter, while police have refrained from confirming or denying the involvement of black magic elements in the arrest of both ministers.
