Guelta d’Archei, also known simply as Guelta, is an oasis nestled in the heart of the Sahara Desert. A Guelta is a unique type of wetland found in desert regions, formed when groundwater rises to the surface in low-lying depressions, creating permanent pools and reservoirs.
Located on the Ennedi Plateau in northeastern Chad, Guelta d’Archei is tucked away behind the plateau.
The surrounding peaks feature rock paintings from the Middle Holocene, highlighting the ancient history of this remarkable oasis.
