In a pioneering move for Pakistan, Rawalpindi is set to implement a comprehensive strategy for digitizing its transport system to better serve commuters.
According to sources, the Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB) will develop the software for this groundbreaking digital public transport system.
The project will feature a control room and an e-tag system installed at the Pirwadhai Bus Terminal.
The new system will gather detailed data on vehicles at the terminal, including registration numbers, owner information, vehicle color, fitness certificate details, driver’s licenses, route numbers, and tracking information.
All vehicle entries and exits will be monitored in the control room to ensure compliance with safety and service standards.
Inspired by models from Paris, London, and the United States, this digital transport system aims to enhance safety and comfort for citizens. If successful, the project will be expanded to other cities in Punjab.
The initiative is expected to improve vehicle fitness levels and allow citizens to file complaints online about public and government transport services.
Rashid Ali, Secretary of the Regional Transport Authority (RTA), described the project as a landmark development for Rawalpindi.
He noted that IT facilities have been sourced from the Punjab Government’s IT sector, with senior officials from the IT and Punjab Transport Departments scheduled to visit Rawalpindi on September 2 to finalize the project.
