Game On or Game Over? How AI-Powered Scammers Target Young Gamers -Kaspersky report-2024

-

As gaming continues to grow in popularity, so do the tactics of cybercriminals targeting the gaming community.

Cybercriminals are increasingly leveraging AI to automate and customize phishing attacks, particularly aimed at young gamers.

One common scam involves offers for new skins—essentially clothing or armor that enhances a character’s abilities. While some skins are easy to obtain, others are rare and highly coveted.

However, scammers aren’t primarily after personal information like credit card details. Instead, they use gaming as bait to deceive users into various scams, such as fake downloads or prize claims.

This deceptive tactic redirects users to more dangerous scams under the guise of a legitimate verification process, according to Vasily Kolesnikov, a security expert at Kaspersky.
