Cristiano Ronaldo once again etched his name in football history by becoming the first men’s player to participate in six editions of the European Championship, as reported by The National.
The Portuguese striker achieved this milestone after his national team secured a 2-1 victory over Czech Republic in their opening match of Euro 2024 on Tuesday.
Ronaldo, aged 39, made his debut in the European Championship in 2004, where Portugal lost in the finals to Greece. Since then, he has featured in every tournament.
The Al Nassr star, who set a new record for most goals in the Saudi Pro League with 35 goals this season, remained a formidable presence throughout, despite falling short of his record of 14 goals at the Euros.
“Today marks the beginning of another chapter in our history,” Ronaldo expressed before the match. “I fondly recall my first day with the national team, a journey filled with challenges and triumphs. Now, I am honored to stand alongside a team of champions, brimming with talent and determination. With everyone’s strength and support, we are turning dreams into reality. Together, let’s fight for another victory. United, we are unstoppable.”
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner has amassed 130 goals in 208 appearances for Portugal since his debut at 18 years old under Brazilian coach Luiz Felipe Scolari in August 2003.
In addition, defender Pepe, who debuted for Portugal in November 2007, became the oldest player to compete in a European Championship at 41 years and 113 days, surpassing the previous record held by Hungary goalkeeper Gabor Kiraly, who was 40 years and 86 days old when he played against Belgium in the Euro 2016 round of 16.
