Pakistan’s javelin thrower Muhammad Yasir Sultan added another medal to the nation’s tally, winning bronze at the Asian Throwing Championship 2025 in Mokpo, South Korea.
The 26-year-old athlete secured third place with a season-best throw of 77.43 meters, achieved on his sixth and final attempt. Yasir’s performance came after a shaky start — his first and fifth throws were fouls, while his second reached 75.79m. Two subsequent throws hovered around 72m, before he delivered a powerful final attempt that sealed Pakistan’s only medal in the competition.

The gold medal went to Sri Lanka’s Pathirage Rumesh Tharanga, who produced an outstanding 82.05m throw, making him the only athlete to cross the 80m mark. Japan’s Gen Naganuma clinched the silver medal with a best throw of 78.60m.
For Yasir, this bronze continues his strong run at the continental level. He had previously won silver at the same championship in 2024 with a 78.10m throw, and bronze at the 2023 Asian Athletics Championships, where he set his personal best of 79.93m.
Pakistan’s star athlete and Olympic gold medalist Arshad Nadeem was notably absent from the event. Nadeem is currently undergoing rehabilitation in Cambridge after surgery for a calf injury. While he has resumed light training, he opted out of both the Asian Throwing Championship and the upcoming Diamond League events in Poland and Switzerland.
Yasir’s medal is being seen as an encouraging sign for Pakistan’s javelin prospects, proving that the country has depth in the discipline even in Nadeem’s absence. Athletics experts believe Yasir’s consistency on the Asian stage could make him a strong contender for future international competitions.
