Although Carlos Alcaraz defeated Tallon Griekspoor, Spain’s hopes of advancing were crushed when Marcel Granollers and Alcaraz lost in the deciding doubles match. Earlier, Nadal’s singles match ended in a 6-4, 6-4 defeat to Botic van de Zandschulp, ending his 29-match winning streak in Davis Cup singles.
With tears in his eyes, Nadal delivered a heartfelt 15-minute speech, reflecting on his extraordinary journey. “What I’ve always tried to do is be a good person, and I hope you’ve seen that,” he told the crowd. “I leave tennis with many friends and a legacy I’m proud of—both in sports and in life.”
Looking back on his career, Nadal expressed gratitude for more than 20 years in tennis. “I’ve had both good and bad moments, but I feel incredibly fortunate for the love I’ve received, especially here in Spain,” he added.
Nadal admitted his farewell didn’t unfold as he had envisioned. “It’s clear that it didn’t go as we hoped. I gave everything I had. Thank you for letting me spend these final days as a professional team player,” he said.
“My body has told me it’s time to stop playing tennis, and I must accept that. I am privileged to have turned my passion into a career,” Nadal reflected, thanking his family, team, and friends for their unwavering support. “I believe in continuity—keeping close the people you love. Without them, this journey wouldn’t have been possible.”
Despite facing criticism for including Nadal in the lineup, Spain’s Davis Cup captain David Ferrer watched as the Netherlands advanced to the semi-finals, where they will meet the winner of the Canada-Germany match.
