Gender Controversy – Leaked Report Claims Olympic Champion Imane Khelif Is Biologically Male

-

A leaked medical report has dropped a seismic shock on the boxing world, alleging that Algerian Olympic gold medallist Imane Khelif is biologically male — reigniting the fierce global debate on gender, fairness, and eligibility in women’s sports.

Khelif, who made history with her win in the women’s boxing division at the 2024 Paris Olympics, is now under a harsh spotlight after a document—reportedly from India’s Dr Lal PathLabs—surfaced. The report, dated March 2023 and circulated by veteran journalist Alan Abrahamson, claims the presence of the SRY gene on Khelif’s Y chromosome — a genetic marker typically found in biological males.

The timing couldn’t be more explosive. The leak comes just days after World Boxing rolled out its new “Sex, Age and Weight” policy, requiring all athletes over 18 to undergo PCR testing for the SRY gene to ensure “safe and fair” competition. Until she complies, Khelif has been sidelined from all sanctioned events, including the Eindhoven Box Cup.

“This policy was created to protect the integrity and safety of combat sports,” World Boxing said in a firm statement, standing by its decision.

This isn’t Khelif’s first bout with controversy. In 2023, she was disqualified by the now-defunct IBA on similar grounds—a decision that split opinion and even drew skepticism from then-IOC President Thomas Bach, who flagged inconsistencies in the testing.

Despite the scrutiny, Khelif staged a fierce comeback at the Paris Olympics, becoming the first Algerian woman to clinch gold in boxing—an achievement hailed across Algeria.

The Algerian Olympic Committee has come out swinging, blasting the new claims as “unsubstantiated” and “politically motivated.” They accuse critics of trying to smear a national hero who brought pride and glory to the country.

Khelif, 25, has consistently denied all allegations about her gender identity. She has remained defiant and focused, pledging to defend her title at the 2028 Los Angeles Games.

But the storm continues to swirl. British broadcaster Piers Morgan demanded vindication for his earlier warnings on gender fairness in sport. Olympian Sharron Davies warned of the “erosion of women’s sport,” while activist Riley Gaines sparked further controversy by referring to Khelif with male pronouns online.

The firestorm reflects a larger global reckoning: How do sports federations balance inclusivity with competitive fairness, especially in physically intense arenas like boxing, athletics, and swimming?

Khelif isn’t alone in the crosshairs. Taiwanese boxer Lin Yu-ting, also flagged in the past, faced similar questions despite her participation in Paris.

World Boxing has made its stance clear: no gender certification, no competition.

As the dust refuses to settle, Khelif’s career hangs in limbo — caught in the clash between identity, science, and the future of women’s sport.
