Afghanistan skipper Rashid Khan has voiced frustration over the constant mockery of his team being dubbed “Asia’s second-best side.”
Afghanistan, once considered strong contenders after India, crashed out of the Asia Cup in the group stage following a nail-biter against Bangladesh and a heavy defeat to Sri Lanka.
Rashid reminded critics that the tag wasn’t self-proclaimed: “We never called ourselves Asia’s No. 2. Our performances — beating big teams in the World Cup, Champions Trophy, and other tournaments — earned us that label. If we don’t perform, we’ll slip to third, fourth, or fifth, but we never gave ourselves that title.”
He admitted the team struggled due to limited T20 match practice before the tournament, poor adaptability in bowling, and batting that fell below par. Still, Rashid insists the focus is now on preparing for the T20 World Cup 2026.
