‘From Challenges to Triumph’ – Pakistan Reaches Semifinals at Asian Hockey Championship 2024

-

Pakistan’s hockey team is proving to be a strong contender in the 2024 Asian Hockey Champions Trophy, currently taking place in Moqi, China.

The team drew their opening matches against Malaysia and South Korea, before securing their first win against Japan. They built on this momentum with a victory over China, earning a place in the semi-finals.

Under the leadership of captain Ammad Butt, the team is determined to claim the championship title. In a recent interview, Ammad shared reflections on his career, personal life, and the state of hockey in Pakistan.

Ammad hails from a small town in Sialkot, Punjab, a city known for producing top hockey talent. His journey has been one of resilience and determination. Inspired by Sialkot’s hockey legacy, he worked tirelessly to make his mark on the sport.

His dedication paid off when he was directly selected for the national team, an honor few achieve. But his path was not without challenges. Early in his career, he faced serious injuries that jeopardized his progress. However, through sheer willpower and perseverance, he recovered and returned to form.

Ammad’s career highlights include being part of the team that defeated both the Netherlands and India in the quarterfinals and semifinals of the 2014 Champions Trophy. This victory secured Pakistan’s first silver medal in the tournament after 15 years. For Ammad, defeating India on their home ground, in front of 70,000 fans, remains a cherished memory.

In 2019, Ammad was awarded the ‘Magical Skills Scorer’ award by the International Hockey Federation for an outstanding goal during the Olympic qualifying round in Oman.

Though Ammad acknowledges the decline of hockey in Pakistan, he remains hopeful for a revival. He believes with the support of the Government of Pakistan, the Pakistan Hockey Federation, and private sponsors like PTCL Group, the sport can regain its former glory. He expressed his gratitude to PTCL Group for their support during the ongoing championship.

Despite an opportunity to play for a British club, Ammad chose to stay with Pakistan’s national team. His passion is to see the country rise again on the global hockey stage, beginning with the Asian Champions Trophy.
