In his trademark no-holds-barred style, Anurag Kashyap has taken aim at Bollywood, accusing it of losing its creative soul—and apparently its brains. The director of Dev.D and Gangs of Wasseypur announced he’s ready to pack his bags and head South, where, in his words, filmmakers still understand how to make, well, films.
“I am moving out of Mumbai,” Kashyap declared, attributing his decision to Bollywood’s spiraling costs and obsession with profits over creativity. And just to make sure no feelings were spared, he added, “They don’t understand anything. They can’t even make a Pushpa. That’s Sukumar-level genius, not something Bollywood can manage.”
For Bollywood, still busy building cinematic “universes” while apparently forgetting the basics of storytelling, Kashyap had some biting advice: “When you create a universe, you think you’re God.”
Meanwhile, Kashyap’s Southward expansion is well underway, with roles in Maharaja and Rifle Club already under his belt. Next up? Viduthalai Part 2 and One 2 One. Maybe Bollywood should start taking notes.
