Embracing the Title with Pride – Zeenat Aman Celebrates Being an Aunty

-

Zeenat Aman has sparked a lively discussion on social media by redefining the term “aunty.”

In a recent Instagram post, she challenges the negative perceptions associated with the label. Accompanied by a stylish photo, the legendary actor asked, “Who decided that ‘aunty’ is a derogatory term?”

Zeenat proudly embraces the title, declaring, “I’m an aunty and proud.” She reflects on the kindness and support she received from her stepmother, Shamim aunty, who played a vital role in her life, especially during the challenging years of motherhood. “Where would we be without those ubiquitous older women?” she questions, highlighting the nurturing presence of Indian aunties.

In her tribute, she beautifully describes these women: “They provide a shoulder to lean on, an ear for your problems, a hot meal, a silly joke, a welcoming home, a righteous scolding, a pearl of wisdom.” Rather than viewing the term negatively, she encourages her followers to celebrate the invaluable contributions of aunts in their lives.

Zeenat’s post goes beyond personal reflection; it’s a call to challenge societal norms and honor the true essence of being an “aunty.”

Earlier, she stirred controversy with another Instagram post advocating for live-in relationships before marriage. “Someone asked me for relationship advice in the comments of my last post. Here’s a personal opinion I haven’t shared before – if you’re in a relationship, I strongly suggest living together before getting married,” she wrote.

She elaborated, “This is the same advice I’ve given my sons, both of whom have had or are in live-in relationships. It seems logical that couples should first test their relationship before involving families and the government.”

While many appreciated Zeenat’s honesty, others, including veteran actress Mumtaz, expressed disagreement. Mumtaz, who co-starred with Aman in the 1971 film Hare Rama Hare Krishna, offered a cautionary perspective.

“Zeenat should be careful with her advice,” Mumtaz told Zoom. “She’s gained sudden popularity on social media, and I understand her desire to seem like a ‘cool aunty.’ But giving advice that contradicts our moral values isn’t the way to build a following.” She added, “For instance, Zeenat knew Mazhar Khan for years before marrying him, and her marriage was far from perfect. She should be the last person offering relationship advice.”
