No Suspension of Social Media Apps in Muharram

-

On Friday, the national government decided not to block social media apps or shut down mobile phone signals during Muharram “to keep peace.”

A day earlier, the Punjab government asked the national government to block apps like Facebook, TikTok, Twitter, and WhatsApp from Muharram 6 to 11 due to reports of troublemaking activities from another country.

Sources say the national government said no to this request. They instructed officials to ensure good security during Muharram. But, they agreed to turn off mobile signals only where there are processions and meetings.

The Punjab government also asked the national interior secretary to stop social media from Muharram 6 to 11. This was to avoid spreading hate and wrong information to stop fights between groups.
