With Karachi reeling under brutal heat and up to 12-hour power cuts, NEPRA has ordered K-Electric to act fast or face the heat. The power regulator slammed the utility company over prolonged outages, operational failures, and rising public outrage, directing immediate reforms to restore reliable supply.
In a scathing notice, NEPRA called out K-Electric for crippling daily life and damaging businesses in Pakistan’s largest industrial hub. It demanded urgent improvements in recovery systems, loss control, and overall efficiency — warning that continued chaos will not be tolerated.
Adding pressure, NEPRA imposed penalties on KE and other companies for baseless load-shedding and criticised KE’s heavy reliance on expensive private generation while failing to provide affordable power to consumers. The authority also ordered K-Electric to submit a compliance report within seven days detailing its corrective measures.
Meanwhile, Energy Minister Awais Leghari confirmed the government is preparing a review petition against NEPRA’s recent tariff ruling on KE. “We’re pushing for a fair power price that protects both the government and consumers,” Leghari told media, expressing hope that NEPRA will rule in the nation’s interest.
