No More Free : KMC Orders Karachiites to Pay for Underground Water

-

The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has announced through a gazette notification that the free use of groundwater for citizens and industries in Karachi will cease, akin to the billing of electricity.

Effective immediately, water extraction, use, and sale from underground sources will be closely monitored by the city government. The notification extends across the Karachi Division and surrounding regions, encompassing corporations, commercial enterprises, hotels, educational institutions, residential complexes, apartments, flats, and high-rise buildings.

According to the notification, only individual residential houses will remain exempt from metered groundwater usage.

In a significant development shared during a meeting with the Council of Economic and Energy Journalists by Mayor Karachi, Murtaza Wahab emphasized that the installation of digital water meters will commence from August 1. He urged citizens not to install these meters in industrial areas.
