Severe Blow to Energy Debt Talks as Chinese Engineers Killed in Karachi had key role

-

Finance Minister Aurangzeb revealed the Chinese engineers killed in Karachi were involved in restructuring Pakistan’s $16 billion energy debt.

The attack has significantly hindered negotiations aimed at securing a repayment extension.

Aurangzeb highlighted that the engineers had been working with Energy Minister Awais Leghari to re-profile debt repayments in a bid to lower electricity tariffs. However, the potential extension could raise Pakistan’s debt by an additional $1.3 billion.

The Chinese embassy confirmed the deaths of two nationals and the injury of one.

Amid mounting security concerns, Beijing has suggested establishing a joint security company to protect its citizens in Pakistan. Despite Islamabad’s creation of special army security divisions, Chinese nationals remain at risk.

China has since advised its citizens to reconsider travel to Pakistan, especially to Balochistan and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa. Aurangzeb expressed his condolences, acknowledging the engineers’ contributions to

fostering a mutually beneficial energy agreement between the two nations.
