Crackdown on Heavy Vehicles-Drug Tests, Speed Limits & Digital Monitoring Enforced

-

In a bid to curb the rising number of road accidents in Karachi, the Sindh government has launched a major traffic reform drive—such as mandatory drug testing for heavy vehicles drivers ,Speed Limits & Digital Monitoring .

Sindh Transport Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon announced the decision, saying several new measures are being implemented to improve road safety and reduce mishaps involving trucks, dumpers, and tankers.

Mandatory Drug Tests:

All heavy vehicle drivers in Karachi will now be subjected to drug tests to ensure they are physically and mentally fit to drive.

Speed Limit Reduced:

The speed limit for heavy traffic has been brought down to 30 km/h to lower the risk of fatal accidents.

Stricter Licensing Policy:

The process for obtaining heavy vehicle driving licenses is being made tougher to ensure only properly trained drivers are allowed on the roads.

Helmet Enforcement:

Traffic authorities have been directed to strictly enforce helmet use among motorcyclists to prevent serious injuries.

The move follows many tragic incidents including 2 days before incident that occurred at Nagan Chowrangi where a speeding dumper hit 23-year-old motorcyclist Daniyal. The accident triggered violent protests across Karachi, resulting in at least 11 dumpers and tankers being set ablaze in different parts of the city.

In a related effort, DIG Traffic Pir Muhammad Shah has also introduced tech-driven measures to improve traffic oversight:

Installation of Cameras:

All dumpers must be equipped with front and rear cameras to determine fault in case of accidents.

Vehicle Tracking:

Trackers will be installed in all dumpers, allowing traffic police to monitor movement from a centralized control room.

These new regulations reflect a focused push by the provincial government to bring order to Karachi’s roads and ensure public safety.
