Karachi came alive with energy and enthusiasm as the 10th Special Olympics Pakistan (SOP) Marathon Race kicked off on January 26, 2025. With competitive races, inspiring performances, and a strong message of inclusivity, the event brought together people of all backgrounds in a celebration of sportsmanship and unity.
The streets of Karachi buzzed with excitement as top athletes and spirited participants lined up for the 10th SOP Marathon, a true spectacle of determination and passion. Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori and Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem graced the event, fueling the energy of the crowd.
The action-packed day featured thrilling races across 21.2km, 10km, 5km, and 1km categories. In the men’s 21.2km half marathon, Qasim Bajwa raced to victory, with Faizan Zulfikar and Muhammad Sajjad securing second and third. Natasha Hassan took the women’s half marathon crown, while Sahrish Khan and Kokab Sarwar claimed second and third. The 10km races saw Mahnoor Fatima and Shakir Usman sprint to first place in their respective categories. In the 5km races, Qandeel Sultan and Muhammad Ziaullah emerged as champions.
Governor Tessori, addressing the crowd at the closing ceremony, highlighted the power of inclusivity and teamwork, declaring, “Everyone must move forward together.” He also announced that future marathons would be organized under the Governor House’s patronage, showing the government’s strong commitment to sports and community.
The day wasn’t just about racing; a special children’s walk saw youngsters with special needs take center stage, their courage and enthusiasm inspiring everyone. Tessori commended their spirit, paying tribute to the families supporting them.
In a powerful message, Governor Tessori affirmed Pakistan’s peaceful nature, stating, “We must show the world that Pakistanis are peace-loving people.” He also shared his recent meeting with Arshad Nadeem in Mian Channu, highlighting his decision to back the Special Olympics marathon in Karachi.
Meanwhile, in the capital, the 5th Islamabad Marathon kicked off with races in 5km, 10km, half, and full marathon categories, attracting runners and spectators from all over.
