Colombo: In a surprizing twist, former Sri Lankan Navy Chief Admiral Nishantha Ulugetenne has been arrested in a 15-year-old abduction and disappearance case, sending shockwaves through the nation’s military and diplomatic circles.
The dramatic arrest links back to 2010, when a 48-year-old man mysteriously vanished under suspicious circumstances—at a time when Ulugetenne was heading the Navy’s Intelligence Directorate.
Police revealed that after intense questioning, the former top commander was formally taken into custody, and a local court has ordered him remanded until Wednesday.
Once the 24th Navy Chief of Sri Lanka (2020–2022) and later Ambassador to Cuba, Admiral Ulugetenne now finds himself at the center of a high-profile case that’s resurrecting old ghosts of alleged state-backed disappearances—and casting a long shadow over his decorated career.
