South Korea is experiencing an extraordinary monsoon season, with the summer monsoon front bringing an unprecedented amount of rainfall to the country. From June 25 until this Wednesday, an average of 316.8 mm of rain has fallen nationwide, marking this July as the wettest on record.

The southern parts of the country have been particularly affected, with significant downpours totaling 640 mm in Yeongju, North Gyeongsang Province, followed closely by 638.7 mm in Gwangju. Other areas experiencing heavy rainfall include Namwon in North Jeolla Province, receiving 630.5 mm, and Gurye in South Jeolla with 608 mm.

Concerns of Flash Floods and Landslides Rise

In a surprising turn of events, the central parts of the country and the capital region are now being hammered by relentless rain. Dongjak district in Seoul has recorded 391.5 mm of rainfall, while Gangnam has seen 326.5 mm.

The Korea Meteorological Administration has predicted that the entire country will remain soaked for another week. According to their forecasts released on Thursday, the capital region is expected to receive up to 300 mm of additional rainfall by Saturday. The South Chungcheong and North Jeolla regions may witness up to 400 mm, while North Chungcheong, North Gyeongsang, and Gangwon regions could experience up to 300 mm of rainfall.

Residents are advised to stay vigilant and take necessary precautions as the ongoing downpours and anticipated heavy rain could lead to flash floods and landslides.
