UN Envoy Reports Over 180 Killed in Fighting in Sudan

-

According to the UN envoy, more than 180 people have been killed in ongoing fighting in Sudan. The violence has caused concern for the safety of civilians and has led to displacement in the region

UN special representative for Sudan, Volker Perthes, has reported that at least 185 people have been killed and 1,800 injured in three days of fighting between rival factions in Sudan. The Group of Seven has also called for an immediate end to hostilities. The two sides are using tanks, artillery, and other heavy weapons in densely populated areas, with fighter jets and anti-aircraft fire also being used. The power struggle is between General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, the commander of the armed forces, and General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, the head of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a paramilitary group.

The former allies jointly orchestrated an October 2021 military coup. The outbreak of violence has trapped millions of people in their homes, with supplies running low in many areas. The violence has raised fears of civil war just as Sudanese were trying to revive the drive for a democratic, civilian government after decades of military rule.

Numerous nations and organizations have demanded an urgent ceasefire due to the ongoing violence in Sudan. Along with Egypt, which supports Sudan’s military, the United Nations, the United States, and other parties are pleading with the warring parties to end hostilities. The paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) led by General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo have close relations with Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, both of which have demanded an end to the bloodshed. With supplies running low in many locations, millions of people are confined to their homes or shelters as a result of the struggle between the army and the RSF, each of which is led by a rival general. Reports of intense battles using tanks, artillery, and other weaponry in heavily populated areas indicate that the situation is still fluid and unstable.
