Power Sector Overhaul: PM Shehbaz Promises Cheaper Electricity Soon

-

Islamabad – Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has declared that power sector reforms are delivering results, with improved efficiency and lower costs. Chairing a high-level review meeting on Friday, he reaffirmed the government’s commitment to providing affordable electricity and tackling decades-old energy sector challenges.

Key measures driving progress include renegotiating agreements with independent power producers (IPPs) to cut costs, a crackdown on electricity theft, and appointing private-sector professionals to boost distribution companies’ performance. The government has also reported a decline in transmission losses and a 93.26% improvement in bill collection rates by December 2024.

PM Shehbaz assured that continued reforms would lead to further tariff reductions for households and industries. Officials also presented a roadmap featuring a phased reduction of circular debt, competitive power transmission markets, and infrastructure upgrades, including major transmission lines.

He directed authorities to expedite all power sector projects and vowed to intensify anti-theft measures for a 100% loss reduction. Federal ministers and senior officials attended the meeting.
