Meta Replaces Fact-Checkers with User Moderation System

-

Critics warn the move, influenced by political factors, may worsen misinformation and compromise online safety.

Meta has decided to replace independent fact-checkers with a user-driven moderation system on Facebook and Instagram in the U.S., similar to Elon Musk’s “community notes” on X (formerly Twitter). Independent fact-checkers are organizations that verify online information to prevent misinformation.

The change, announced ahead of Donald Trump’s inauguration, has drawn criticism for potentially increasing hate speech and misinformation. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg defended the decision, citing concerns over political bias in third-party moderation. Advocacy groups and fact-checkers, including Full Fact, have expressed disappointment, fearing the change will endanger online safety.

Some experts link the move to Meta’s growing relationship with Trump, who has previously criticized the company’s moderation practices. This shift reflects a broader trend in the tech industry toward prioritizing free speech over stricter content controls.
