Centurion Clash-Abbas & Shahzad Ignite Pakistan’s Hopes of Defending 147

-

The first Test match at Centurion is hanging by a thread, with the outcome still uncertain as South Africa struggles at 27 for 3, needing 121 more runs to reach the modest target of 147 and secure a spot in the 2023-25 World Test Championship final. With the pressure mounting, Pakistan’s bowlers have flipped the game on its head.

After Pakistan was bowled out for 237, South Africa was set a relatively easy target of 148. However, Mohammad Abbas and Khurram Shahzad delivered a brilliant spell of medium-fast bowling, dismantling the South African top order. Apart from Aiden Markram, the South African batters looked uneasy in the closing overs, as Abbas and Shahzad relentlessly targeted their pads. Abbas made the first breakthrough, trapping Tony de Zorzi with a ball that jagged back sharply.

Pakistan’s reviews were a stark contrast to their earlier innings, with successful overturns of two lbw decisions. Shahzad, operating from around the wicket, struck Ryan Rickleton on the front pad, the ball hitting him in line despite him moving across the crease.

Pakistan’s review success continued, with Abbas finding the perfect line and movement. Tristan Stubbs ventured out of his crease but was beaten on the outside edge, and despite the umpire’s initial call, Shan Masood signaled for a review, which proved to be the right decision once again.
