Faiz Hameed’s Contacts with 50 Politicians Under Investigation

-

Veteran journalist Ansar Abbasi revealed in his column for Daily Jang that Faiz Hameed, the former DG ISI (Lieutenant General (retd) Faiz Hameed), had maintained contact with around 50 politicians, most of whom were affiliated with the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). Investigations are currently underway to explore both direct and indirect links between Faiz Hameed and the imprisoned founding chairman of PTI, Imran Khan.

According to well-placed sources, General Faiz was prohibited by the Army Act from engaging in any political activity for five years following his retirement.

This restriction, previously set for two years, was extended in 2023 under a revision to the Army Act, which now states that individuals who held sensitive military positions—whether employed, assisting, or assigned to such duties—cannot engage in political activities for five years after their retirement, resignation, discharge, or dismissal.

Following General Faiz’s arrest, The News and Jang newspapers reported, citing sources, that the former DG ISI remained in contact with Imran Khan after the May 9 events and Khan’s subsequent arrest through multiple intermediaries. The investigation is ongoing to determine the nature of these contacts, whether direct or indirect.

A report from mid-August mentioned a “jail network” and described communications between Imran Khan and the DG ISI through certain politicians and other individuals. Sources claimed that General Faiz had been warned multiple times by military officials about his post-retirement activities, but he had not complied.

After General Faiz’s arrest by military authorities, Imran Khan distanced himself from the matter. A few days later, a legal team that visited Imran Khan in Adiala Jail stated that General Faiz’s arrest was purely an internal military issue and unrelated to the party.

Senior lawyer Intizar Panjotha, after meeting Imran Khan in Rawalpindi Jail, told journalists that General Faiz’s arrest was strictly an internal military matter and had no connection to PTI. He further clarified that it was General Bajwa who had negotiated an agreement with Nawaz Sharif, leading to General Faiz’s replacement.

Panjotha also stated that Imran Khan had suggested that if General Faiz’s arrest were indeed connected to the May 9 events, it would be an appropriate opportunity to form a judicial commission and release the CCTV footage from that day.
