2024 Election: U.S. Welcomes 13 Female Governors
Republican candidate Kelly Ayotte has won the New Hampshire governorship. According to American media, Ayotte, a former senator, defeated Democrat Joyce Craig, the former mayor of Manchester, to secure the position.
With Ayotte’s victory, the number of female governors in the U.S. has reached a record-breaking 13, surpassing the previous high of 12 set in 2022.
Among the 13 female governors, five are Republicans — a new high — while eight are Democrats.
In the U.S., governors are elected directly and wield considerable authority. Despite this milestone, 18 of the 50 U.S. states have yet to elect a female governor.
Meanwhile, Kamala Harris’s loss in the presidential race has delayed the historic moment of the first female U.S. president.
Some commentators see Harris’s defeat and Trump’s victory as a reflection of lingering male bias, with many male voters reportedly choosing Trump over Harris based solely on gender.
