Green Lockdown- Punjab’s Bold Battle Against Lahore’s Toxic Smog

-

In a bold environmental move, the Punjab government has implemented a “green lockdown” in Lahore’s Shimla Pahari and nearby areas to tackle severe smog as part of the Chief Minister’s Multi-Sectoral Plan.

The initiative, introduced by Senior Provincial Minister Maryam Aurangzeb, includes several measures to reduce pollution, such as spraying disinfectant-mixed water in smog-hit zones like Abbott Road and Empress Road. A hotline (1373) has also been set up to allow residents to report high pollution levels for immediate action.

Traffic issues are being addressed through road repairs, relocation of parking spaces outside congested areas, and promoting carpooling. To support these efforts, special surveillance teams have been deployed.

Additional actions under the green lockdown include planting 200 saplings, clearing encroachments, and monitoring emissions from government power generators. Recently, fire squads extinguished a large garbage fire, and open barbecue spots in the Shimla Hill green zone were closed to help further curb pollution sources.
