INDIA SHOULD PREPARE FOR BATTLE

India should prepare for Battle as Monkey pox Cases explode in US, UK, Other Non-African Countries. Several National Health authorities have confirmed cases of monkey pox, a rare viral infection, around the world. The World Health Organization recently stated that it predicts an increase in monkeypox cases worldwide in the near future. Monkeypox cases in most nations outside of Africa have been related to travel.  However, they discovered over 2,100 cases in 42 countries, with the bulk of them unable to be traced back to Africa.

Scientists tested and demonstrated small pox vaccines to be useful against monkeypox over the years. However, this does not negate the fact that it is a cause for concern. Smallpox vaccines were discontinued decades ago. Also, they are now largely hoarded for national security reasons in a small number of countries. Despite the fact that India has yet to record a case, the country is seeing more Covid-19 cases every day. As a result, it is critical to take the required steps to avoid another load.

THE CURRENT SITUATION:

Human cases of this disease were recorded in 11 African countries from 1970 to January. Monkeypox cases in nations outside of Africa, including as Israel, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Singapore, happened until recently as a result of foreign travel or imported animals. Several nations, including the United Arab Emirates, the Czech Republic, Sweden, and others, have lately identified their first cases.

Since January,WHO reported roughly 2,103 monkeypox across 42 nations, up till now. The World Health Organization has described the virus’s rapid spread as “extraordinary.” Monkeypox cases have appeared unexpectedly in many nations in the last two months.  It’s possible that transmission has been going on for a long time without acknowledgment. In order to coordinate virus-fighting efforts, WHO abolished the difference between endemic and non-endemic countries.

SHOULD INDIA BE AFRAID AND PREPARE FOR BATTLE?

Authorities across the world are constantly on the alert for possible lethal illnesses. Which follow the destruction inflicted by the Covid-19 outbreak. The unexpected breakout of infections in different places could be due to a number of factors. They discontinued the production of smallpox vaccine when the disease eradicated, and the vaccine’s immunity began to diminish. It’s also likely that the virus has evolved and become more transmissible than previously. However, we don’t have enough information to know for sure.

The virus is already spreading from human to human even in non-endemic countries, as per recent findings. Monkeypox, like Covid-19, transfers through respiratory droplets. However, current information suggests that transmission is only possible through persistent close contact.

The good news is that many of the same precautions that are used to prevent Covid, are also used to prevent monkeypox. These include, avoiding close contact with others, wearing masks in public, washing hands often, and sanitising surfaces.

People are becoming accustomed to such steps in emergency situations over the last two years. It will be easier to rouse people this time if necessary. In contrast to Covid-19, where developing and testing a novel vaccine required several months, monkeypox will take much less time. This is because we already have the vaccine and numerous good options for mass manufacturing. The problem will be generating vaccinations in a timely manner and distributing them fairly.

STEPS TO CONTROL THE SPREAD:

It is vital to comprehend that any virus, particularly one spread through the respiratory system, has the ability to affect a large number of people. We can treat monkeypox with a technique called “ring vaccination.” All close contacts with a suspected or confirmed case receive vaccination in this. This will aid in stopping the virus’s spread before it becomes unmanageable. It is equally crucial to make information about the virus readily accessible to both healthcare professionals and people. Campaigns for information and education are vital in preventing the spread of disease.

India should start producing the smallpox vaccine till we can obtain the monkeypox vaccine. This, by taking use of our extensive vaccine manufacturing capacity. We must also get ready to administer these dosages for ring vaccination. We can use smallpox vaccine as a treatment in the early clinical stages of the illness. To diagnose the illness and find cases before they spread, we should also enhance our testing capabilities.

It is not the first time a virus with the potential to do harm has emerged. We can hope that we can stop the spread of monkeypox. However, rising globalization, climate change, and greater animal-human contact will only increase the chances of these incidents.

In order to improve disease surveillance capabilities and have access to testing and treatments for potential dangers in the future, we must spend more people funds in this area.
