Sindh Government Launches Second Phase of Premium Number Plates

-

The Sindh government is ramping up its flood relief efforts by launching the second phase of premium number plate issuance in Karachi, starting October 12th.

This initiative aims to continue supporting flood victims, building on the success of the first phase.

In July, the initial phase raised Rs. 670 million, which is funding what has become the world’s largest housing project for flood-affected families.

This update was shared by Senior Minister for Information, Transport, and Excise, Sharjeel Inam Memon, during a recent press conference.

A key feature of this phase is the introduction of an online portal, allowing buyers to conveniently purchase premium number plates from home—a first-of-its-kind initiative in Pakistan.

Overview of the First Auction

In June, the Sindh government conducted its first premium number plate auction at a local hotel in Karachi, giving motorists the chance to personalize their vehicles with distinctive plates.

The auction featured three categories:

Platinum: Three-character plates starting at Rs. 2 million.

Gold: Plates with up to five characters, starting at Rs. 1 million.

Silver: Plates with up to seven characters, starting at Rs. 50,000.

Ban on Choice Number Plates in Sindh

In July, the Sindh government implemented a ban on regular (choice) number plates, which prevents vehicle owners from selecting specific number or letter combinations. Instead, numbers are now assigned sequentially based on the application date for both private and government vehicles.

Premium plates, however, are exempt from this rule.

Interested buyers will need to wait for the government to announce the process for acquiring these special plates.
