Decision at the eleventh hour – FBR Extends Income Tax Filing Deadline to October 14, 2024

-

The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has announced an extension for filing income tax returns, addressing requests from various stakeholders.

The new deadline is now October 14, 2024, as stated in a notification issued by the FBR late Monday.

Exercising its powers under Section 214A of the Income Tax Ordinance 2001, the FBR announced, “The deadline for filing Income Tax returns for the Tax Year 2024, for those required to file by September 30, 2024, is hereby extended to October 14, 2024, in response to requests from trade bodies, Tax Bar Associations, and the public.”

This extension was announced just hours after the FBR had indicated that no further extensions would be granted.

Earlier that day, the FBR had dismissed rumors about a possible extension, urging taxpayers to file their returns promptly to avoid penalties and fines.

Speculation about an extension had arisen due to technical difficulties within the FBR’s system. Many taxpayers faced challenges while trying to file returns as the system struggled to manage the increased volume.

Despite these issues, the FBR reported that over 3.5 million individuals had successfully submitted their returns, with most from salaried individuals processed without significant problems.

The FBR hopes that this extended deadline will give taxpayers the additional time they need to file their returns, ensuring compliance and helping them avoid penalties.
