Jay Shah Poised to Become New ICC Chairman – Report

-

According to a report from The Age, BCCI secretary Jay Shah is likely to be the next chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC).

This development follows the decision of the current ICC chairman, Greg Barclay, to step down at the end of his term on November 30, 2024.

Barclay, who has been in office for four years, opted out of running for a third term, reportedly amid a $3 billion dispute with Star, the ICC’s major broadcast rights holder.

Though no official confirmation has been made by Shah or the ICC, sources close to the situation have indicated that the decision is likely. The deadline for filing official nominations for the ICC chairman position is August 27.

The ICC chairman is allowed up to three terms, each lasting two years. The selection process involves 16 votes, with a candidate now needing a simple majority of nine votes to win, as opposed to the previous requirement of a two-thirds majority.

Jay Shah, who currently leads the ICC’s Finance and Commercial Affairs (F&CA) sub-committee, is seen as a highly influential figure within the ICC. If elected, at 35, Shah would be the youngest person ever to hold the position.

He has one year remaining as BCCI secretary before a mandatory three-year cooling-off period begins in October 2025.

Past Indian ICC chairmen include Jagmohan Dalmiya, Sharad Pawar, N Srinivasan, and Shashank Manohar.
