Shahid Afridi Criticizes Babar azam for Captaincy Calls for Grassroots Reforms

Former Pakistan cricket captain Shahid Afridi has strongly criticized Babar Azam’s leadership following Pakistan’s poor performance in the T20 World Cup, co-hosted by the USA and West Indies.

In a recent media interaction, Afridi highlighted the importance of effective leadership, particularly scrutinizing Babar Azam’s influence on the team’s overall performance and demeanor throughout the tournament.

He drew comparisons to Indian captain Rohit Sharma, who recently led his team to victory over South Africa, securing their second T20 World Cup title.

“The role of a leader is crucial. The captain’s body language sets the tone for the team. Look at Rohit Sharma; his aggressive and confident style boosts his team. The captain’s example is vital,” Afridi stated.

Afridi, while affirming his support for Pakistan cricket, emphasized the need for substantial reforms at the grassroots level. He expressed disappointment in the current state of cricket development in Pakistan and stressed the importance of investing in the grassroots to nurture future talent.

“I’m always available for Pakistan cricket, but the real need is at the grassroots level. Our product at the grassroots is weak. Investing there will yield good players. Real changes are needed at the grassroots level,” Afridi remarked.

Afridi also addressed the overall governance of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), advocating for structural changes in the selection and administrative processes. He argued for the separation of the board’s executive and selection functions and called for a more autonomous and strong selection committee.

“There should be a proper board with a strong selection committee. The chairman should have good relationships with other boards and manage tours, but should not be involved in selections or announcing the captain. These decisions should be made by an independent and strong selection committee,” Afridi concluded.
