Developing Karachi – A Vision for Future Urban Planning

-

Karachi has seen many master plans, but none have been fully realized. The city’s rapid and unplanned growth has led to many problems, especially in informal settlements.

The new master plan must consider local and global changes—social, economic, and technological—to effectively address the city’s complex issues. Improving existing informal settlements should be the main focus, enhancing housing, public spaces, schools, and health facilities. Transportation remains a major challenge, requiring pedestrian-friendly infrastructure and affordable public transport options.

Supporting the thriving street economy is essential by providing organized spaces for hawkers and protecting informal settlements.

Public participation in the planning process is crucial, with exhibitions and an urban museum fostering community engagement. The new plan must anticipate and adapt to future changes, ensuring a sustainable, inclusive, and vibrant Karachi for all its residents.
